James Richards
Painting Demonstration "Tuscan Hillside"
I begin the painting with a rough sketch
in a warm red tone.
Next, I block in the pattern of darks.
Here, I have put in the shadows on my
uprights. I also have set the key of the
painting by painting in the lightest
plane, the sky.
I now start blocking the painting with
great care to match the local color. I
also try to keep the edges separated
so I can develop them after all my color
relationships have been established.
I work slowly at developing each
passage in the painting.
Here, I've covered the entire canvas
with the appropriate color and value. I
now begin modifying the edges and
form of each object.
Ahhh the moment of truth. The
finished painting.
